Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 4 slices whole grain bread for a hearty, nutty texture
  • 4 ounces gouda cheese sliced, for creamy richness
  • 1 medium apple thinly sliced, e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp
  • optional turkey bacon cooked and crumbled, for extra heartiness
For the Sage Butter
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter softened, for rich crust
  • 1 tablespoon fresh sage chopped, for aromatic flavor
  • to taste salt for seasoning
  • to taste pepper for seasoning

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter and chopped fresh sage. Stir until the mixture is well blended and fragrant.
  2. Thinly slice your apple and gouda cheese, creating layers for your sandwich.
  3. Generously coat one side of each slice of whole grain bread with the sage butter mixture.
  4. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the apple slices, gouda cheese, and optional turkey bacon.
  5. Place the other slices of bread on top, buttered side out, creating a sandwich.
Cooking
  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat and place the sandwich in the skillet.
  2. Cook until golden brown and the cheese is bubbling, about 3-5 minutes per side.
  3. Once cooked, remove from heat and slice in half. Serve hot.

Notes

This delightful sandwich is best enjoyed warm, straight from the skillet. Serve it with a side of simple salad or a bowl of hot tomato soup for a comforting meal.
