Ingredients

Bread Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water Around 100°F
  • 3/4 cup warm milk Around 100°F
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast Ensure it is fresh
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add the softened butter, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Add the remaining flour a little at a time until the dough becomes soft and workable.
  4. Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch the dough down gently and shape it into a log.
  7. Transfer the dough to a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, until it rises slightly above the rim of the pan.
Baking
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
  3. Remove from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing. Don’t rush the rising times; they help develop flavor and texture. If you want a crustier loaf, bake it on a pizza stone or place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
