Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add the softened butter, salt, and 3 cups of flour. Mix until a shaggy dough forms.
- Add the remaining flour a little at a time until the dough becomes soft and workable.
- Knead the dough for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Punch the dough down gently and shape it into a log.
- Transfer the dough to a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, until it rises slightly above the rim of the pan.
Baking
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until golden brown and the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the pan and cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
Use room temperature ingredients for better mixing. Don’t rush the rising times; they help develop flavor and texture. If you want a crustier loaf, bake it on a pizza stone or place a pan of water in the oven while baking.
