  • ½ cup milk or almond/oat milk for dairy-free
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • Crushed nuts e.g., almonds, pecans

Method

Prepare the Strawberry Topping:
  1. In a bowl, combine sliced strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice.
  2. Gently toss to coat and let sit for 10 minutes to macerate while preparing the French toast.
Make the Custard Mixture:
  1. In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and sugar (if using) until smooth.
Soak the Bread:
  1. Dip each slice of bread into the custard mixture for 10-15 seconds per side, ensuring it’s fully coated but not soggy.
Cook the French Toast:
  1. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt the butter.
  2. Place the soaked bread slices onto the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.
Assemble and Serve:
  1. Arrange the French toast slices on plates.
  2. Top with the macerated strawberries and their syrup.
  3. Add your choice of optional toppings, such as powdered sugar, whipped cream, or maple syrup.

Notes

  • Make It Vegan: Replace eggs with a mixture of 2 tablespoons cornstarch and ¼ cup plant-based milk. Use a vegan butter alternative.
  • Make It Gluten-Free: Use certified gluten-free bread and ensure all ingredients are gluten-free.
  • Storage Tips: Leftover French toast can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven or on the stovetop for best results.
